About Us

Our Story
What began as a family journey between two provinces grew into something truly special.
When our father took up work in Matatiele, in the heart of the Eastern Cape, our mother chose to keep her roots in the Western Cape, travelling back and forth between the two worlds. A creative soul at heart, she had always been drawn to colour, texture, and fabric.
It was during this chapter of our lives that she discovered Shweshwe and she was captivated. The bold patterns, vibrant colours, and rich cultural heritage of this iconic Eastern Cape fabric spoke to her deeply.
To keep her hands busy and her heart full, she began sewing pants for us from the material. In time, this evolved into shorts, then into heartfelt gifts for friends, and eventually into something people wanted to buy. Word spread naturally, and what started at a kitchen table became a cherished product among friends and family.
The encouragement was unanimous, friends urged us to share this beautiful product with a wider audience. And so, Mama's was born.
Our mission is simple: to bring the beauty, colour, and vibrant African spirit of Shweshwe to the world. But more than that, we believe in the hands that make it. Mama's is built on the belief that African Mamas should create the product and earn from it. Every purchase supports South African women and the communities they sustain. Currently we are working with a NPO called the Sewing Cafe from Masiphumelele in Cape Town.
Colour. Culture. Community. That's Mama's.
